Our Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are educated in the study of human communication, its development, and its disorders. Our speech language pathologist, often called speech therapists, assess speech, language, cognitive-communication, oral, feeding swallowing skills allowing them to diagnose and develop individual treatment for each client.

Serving Lumberton, Whiteville, NC, & beyond, we provide personalized speech therapy services working with patients of all ages on a broad range of physical and cognitive neurological communication disorders: issues with articulation, stuttering, word finding, semantics, syntax, phonics, vocalization, and swallowing. These disorders have a variety of causes including autism, stroke, brain injury, hearing loss, developmental delay, a cleft palate, and psychological issues.

Speech

Fluency: “Fluency” refers to how sounds, syllables, words, and phrases flow together when speaking quickly. Fluency disorders include cluttering (too-rapid speech with an odd rhythm) and stuttering (involuntary pauses and repetition of sounds).

Voice: Voice difficulties include hoarseness—which is often caused by nodules or polyps on the vocal folds—and abnormal pitch.

Articulation: Articulation disorders deal with issues such as substitution of one sound for another, slurring of speech, or indistinct speech.

Language

Aphasia: Typically caused by stroke or head trauma, aphasia is an inability to understand or produce language because of damage to certain areas of the brain.

Language-Based Learning Disabilities: These neurological differences affect skills such as listening, reasoning, speaking, reading, and writing.

Pragmatics: SLPs work with people who have difficulty understanding social cues and communication rules, such as turn-taking.

Related Disorders

Swallowing: Swallowing and feeding (dysphagia) are also issues addressed by SLPs. Swallowing disorder can have consequences, such as poor nutrition and unhealthy weight loss, and occurs both in children and adults.

Hearing Loss: SLPs treat people with hearing loss to help them develop alternative forms of communication.

Our speech therapists are knowledgeable, trained, state board licensed and nationally accredited by The American Speech Language and Hearing Associations, also recognized as ASHA. They are caring, resourceful and able to work with all types of clients in all types of situations designed tailored treatment plans for the patient’s individualized needs.

Our team includes speech language pathology assistants registered by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech Language and Audiology. SLP-Assistants provide excellent therapy and help balance the workload of the SLP.
